Fernando Alonso has reassured fans about his continued presence in Formula 1, stating that he remains competitive and motivated despite Aston Martin’s tough start to the 2026 season. During his appearance at the Historic Grand Prix of Monaco, the 44-year-old Spanish driver addressed speculation over his retirement at the end of the year.
The AMR26 has struggled significantly since the season began, leading to concerns that Alonso might hang up his helmet. However, the two-time world champion struck a relaxed tone when asked about his future.
“It’s hard to say. I love what I do, I love racing; I ran my first race when I was three years old… and now I’m 44, so I’ve spent 41 years of my life behind the wheel,” Alonso said when discussing a potential farewell after the world championship concludes.
“I think the moment I stop racing will be a very tough decision, and it will be hard for me to accept. I think time will tell. I’ll feel it. For now, I don’t feel like that moment has arrived. I feel competitive, I feel motivated. I’m happy when I drive. I hope this isn’t my last season,” he added.
With the Formula 1 season resuming this weekend in Miami after a month-long break, all eyes will be on Aston Martin. Can they improve the performance of their car and give Alonso reasons to continue?
