Josh Jung and Justin Foscue each connected for solo home runs, powering the Texas Rangers to a 6-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Saturday in Arlington, Texas, ending the Cubs’ 10-game winning streak.
Jung went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Alejandro Osuna contributed two hits and two RBIs, and Joc Pederson added two hits and an RBI for Texas. The Rangers snapped their own two-game losing streak by outhitting Chicago 9-4.
Before being shut out for the fourth time this season, the Cubs had won 20 of their previous 23 games. Chicago finished 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position and stranded 11 baserunners.
Rangers starter Jack Leiter allowed three hits while issuing a season-high five walks and striking out six over 4 2/3 innings. Jalen Beeks (2-1) replaced him and tossed 1 1/3 hitless innings, retiring all four batters he faced. Cole Winn followed with a perfect seventh, and Gavin Collyer closed out the game with two scoreless frames.
Texas opened the scoring with two runs in the second inning. Jung ended an 0-for-12 slump by driving an 0-2 fastball from Edward Cabrera into the right-center field seats for his fifth homer of the season. With runners on the corners and no outs, Osuna added an RBI single to left field.
The Rangers tacked on two more runs in the fourth. Pederson doubled in a run with one out and later scored on Osuna’s single to right.
Cabrera (3-1) surrendered another home run in the fifth inning, as Foscue led off with a solo shot to left field. The 358-foot blast was Foscue’s first career homer in his 23rd major league game. Cabrera allowed five runs on seven hits with one walk and six strikeouts over five innings, and has now given up seven homers over his last four starts.
Texas added an insurance run in the sixth when Kyle Higashioka’s two-out RBI single off Jacob Webb scored a runner.
Chicago left fielder Ian Happ extended his on-base streak to a career-high 30 games after drawing a walk in the first inning.
